Special Commission for “Torn From the Flag”

Documentary Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956

This striking and profound image was created by the internationally acclaimed fine artist Gabor Koranyi in remembrance of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and Freedom Fight.

The maimed Hungarian flag became an instant and poignant symbol of the tragic Hungarian revolution the moment the communist emblem was ripped from the middle by the young freedom fighters.

This flag forms the powerful backdrop of the commemorative image “Torn From the Flag.” In the foreground the viewer witnesses a stream of people filing through history’s timeline. From the left, we view faceless beings through the shadows of prison bars, downcast and repressed. As they file past the torn center of the flag (middle of the image) a cleansing and empowering ray of hope shines through them, and they look upward. This experience allows them to emerge as free and vibrant individuals (the right side of the image) looking straight toward a promising future, and a world now filled with hope.

The anchor to Koranyi’s timeless composition is the bottom third of the image – a historical map of Hungary. This image resonates deeply with each and every Hungarian, and serves as a firm reminder of the deeply-seated historic roots of their love of freedom. These roots continued to fuel their unquenchable thirst for sovereignty through the centuries.

This stubborn love of liberty and identity allowed for the survival of the Hungarian people in the face of all historical odds, in the face of larger and more powerful nations wishing to assimilate them over the course of their 1100 year history.

The limited-edition hand-pulled etching is currently available for acquisition for $300.00 unframed and $450.00 framed. 50% of the proceeds will be donated to assist in the funding of the documentary “Torn from the Flag.”
